Club Atlético Independiente, is an Argentine sports entity from the city of Avellaneda, located in the south of Greater Buenos Aires (GBA). It was founded on January 1, 1905 by some young independent employees of the Maipú Club. Men's soccer is its most outstanding discipline, whose first team participates in the Argentine Professional Soccer League, although other sports disciplines are also practiced at an amateur and semi-professional level.
He exercises his locality in the stadium called Libertadores de América, which has a capacity of 52,069 spectators. The team's identifying colors are red, and have been used in their uniform colors since 1908.
It is one of the most successful and historically renowned clubs in Argentina, South America and the world. At the local level, the Red is the holder of 16 leagues and 9 cups, adding a total of 25 national titles. In addition, in the international arena, the team has achieved a record seven titles in the Copa Libertadores, being the only club to win four consecutive finals, between 1972 and 1975. It is even the top winner in the Inter-American Cup (3 ), the South American Super Cup (2) and the South American Cup (2), being in these last two together with Cruzeiro and Boca Juniors respectively. According to a statistical study conducted by the IFFHS in 2009, it was the second most successful South American team of the 20th century.
His greatest sporting achievements were obtained in 1973 and 1984 when he became champion of the Intercontinental Cup by defeating the representatives of the European Champions Cup: Juventus of Italy and Liverpool of England respectively. Thanks to these achievements, it is part of the select group of the only 29 teams in the world that have won the highest soccer club championship in the world, among more than 300,000 clubs recognized by FIFA.
Since the implementation of the "proportional vote" arranged by the AFA in 1937, Independiente is considered one of the five greats of Argentine soccer together with Boca Juniors, River Plate, San Lorenzo and Racing Club, with the latter starring in the traditional Clásico de Avellaneda.
