Pizzey & Knight Birds of Aus v2.2
Gibbon MultimediaAbout this app
Developer Description
Pizzey & Knight Birds of Australia - Australia's most comprehensive birding app.
The app can be used as a FIELD GUIDE (like the book) or as a BIRD LIST, with essential functions such as view bird page, play the sound, add to your list and view similar birds available directly in both.
The FIELD GUIDE displays the full field guide pages of the book. You can browse the pages and identify a bird, play the sound, add to your list, and open the Bird Page for further detail.
The BIRD GUIDE includes a full bird list and individual BIRD PAGES for over 980 Australian bird species, with illustrations, species text, distribution maps, photographs and sounds.
The BIRD LIST includes all the new species and new names, with functions for Play Sound, Add to List, Distribution map, Bird Page, Similar Birds and Field Guide Page. In addition to English and Scientific names, languages include Dutch, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish, Swedish, Japanese and Chinese. Bird list settings include small, medium and large fonts and thumbs. You can also select regional lists, birding site lists and map location lists.
SIMILAR BIRDS loads a list of birds similar to that selected. COMPARE BIRDS displays the bird pages side by side for direct comparison.
IDENTIFICATION uses location, habitat, bird shapes and plumage to shortlist possible species for identification.
MY LOCATION is an interactive map for finding your current location, generating bird lists for your location, and locating birding sites near you. Tap for a new location, get GPS co-ords and load a bird list, or tap a birding site to get a list or open the site description.
MY LISTS is a personal list manager that includes a life list and sub-lists that report to your life list. You can also sync your lists to Google Drive, and export lists for backup. Sighting details include place, date, GPS co-ords, and sighting notes.
BIRDING SITES includes descriptions of 270 birding sites from around Australia, with photos, bird list, and weather forecast. "Show on Map" loads Google Maps for directions and navigation to the site.
The MULTIMEDIA DATA includes • over 250 field-guide pages • over 980 individual bird pages • all the ‘new’ bird species and names • over 2500 illustrations, 4000 photos, and 700 bird sounds • colour-coded distribution maps with seasonal status bar and endemic and red data species indicated • new rare bird maps.

My favourite paid app ever. By far the best bird app I've used. Has supplanted my paper guides for 90% of my use. Love the lists, my own lists appeal to the twitcher in me , but the distribution-specific lists are great too. The combo of paintings and photos has really helped with IDs, and the bird calls feature is gold - has helped nail several tricky IDs. It is really expensive, and not very flexible, would like to buy regional bird expansion packs at reasonable price. But best in class!
Have transferred the app to my new Android phone and now I can't open it. Comes up with extract data screen when I try to open it and then bombs off if I try to do anything. Previously have found the app useful on my old phone but am frustrated by inability to transfer it to my new phone. Guy Gibbon promptly responded to my problem, offering advice which resolved my problem. So happy to have my app on board and working again.
Good app ruined by 2 things. - 1/People have more than 2 devices these days. Restricting its use to 2 is greedy, especially at the price point. 2/ the search controls don't hold a typed in search after a bird is selected. I get very sick of retyping "parrot"
From the day I installed this app it has regularly crashed when trying to get the list of birds for my GPS location, and that's on two different phones and two different tablets. Dozens of crash reports have been submitted but nothing gets done about it. It's a fault with the app that ruins its most desirable feature! Please fix it! Yes Gibbon Multimedia, the GPS location certainly works, but it only works reliably if you force a stop on the app and restart it from scratch. If it works today it will generally crash tomorrow. There's nothing wrong with the GPS location, the problem is with your app crashing after it has been dormant for some time. Version 1.4 is worse, I have to force stop it every single time I return to the app.
I am really disappointed in the android version of this app. The IOS version is good and is really worth getting if you have an apple device. I have purchased this app twice on Android the first time the list glitched and I was able to receive a refund. The second time I purchased it was after the bug fix and on a new device. The app didn't open due to a 'technical error'. I am really disappointed as I was not refunded and the developers have to replied to my complaint. The price is not ok.
