Product resulting from a research project of the Master's Course in Applied Health Sciences at the University of Vassouras/RJ, designed by student Dr. Ruy Nogueira Jr, under the guidance of Prof. Dr. Marco Aurélio dos Santos Silva. This game was inspired by innate human feeling: solidarity with others.

Tragedies that affect people's health can have a personal or collective aspect. Be that as it may, they have always occurred around the world. Still in the 19th century, we saw the emergence of an organized humanitarian aid movement, aiming to protect health: the RED CROSS. The values of this pioneering organization underpinned the methodization of actions that gained the name "FIRST AID".

In the 20th century, first aid transcended its purposes beyond the contexts in which it traditionally had a captive place, such as places affected by wars and scenes of humanitarian calamities of various hues. Initiatives to teach first aid to communities in general have emerged around the world, often with the support of local legislation, notably in Europe and the USA. Many of these initiatives were sponsored by the UNITED NATIONS, through its “arm” active in the health area, the WORLD HEALTH ORGANIZATION (WHO), an institution always attentive to the health systems of numerous countries, as well as the changes occurring in them, currently and largely sponsored by the large-scale use of INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGIES.

In the scope of first aid, we have the item "CARDIO-RESPIRATORY ARREST (CRA)" as a relevant topic. The importance of this subject gained great momentum with the creation of the INTERNATIONAL LIAISON COMMITTEE ON RESUSCITATION, an organization that today centralizes related data, based on the worldwide standardization of their collection and compilation.

At the same time, the change in paradigms in the training of lay people, whether voluntarily or not, has even evolved to include the topic in the content of school curricula. Efforts in this endeavor have received powerful encouragement since the AMERICAN HEART ASSOCIATION recommended compulsory teaching of CARDIO-PULMONARY RESUSCITATION (CPR) in schools. Another strong initiative was the WHO's endorsement of the "Kids Save Lives" program, which trains children in CPR in European Union countries.
Having as a backdrop the concepts of “eLearning”, adopted by the WHO “Health Academy” program, this application was designed to serve as a tool for INSTRUCTION in the recognition and first response to a CA. It is fundamentally aimed at lay people, both adults and school-age children, based on the advantages provided by the educational process that is conventionally called "gamification", highlighting interaction and "feedback". We seek to present varied, random scenarios, as well as insert motivating and challenging elements, aiming to capture the player's attention and retain the content. One of the game's features is the non-progression of “phases”, if the player chooses a wrong answer, so that the player memorizes the correct sequence of a CPR protocol. Despite NOT INTENDING TO EVALUATE KNOWLEDGE, the game features a scoring system, so that at the end of the game the learner has the option to check their performance.
Regarding the technical aspect, the game focuses on the concept of CPR with high-quality chest compressions. Although it does not in any way replace the training of specific CPR skills, and does not predict player/learner behavior in a real situation, we believe that the simple language and easy access to this application have the potential to contribute as an instrument for training an increasing number of “first responders” to the emergency for which it was designed, in line with the purpose of the global campaign "WORLD RESTART A HEART!"
