Brought to you by Magic Light Pictures and Forestry England, The Gruffalo Spotter 2 app is cutting edge technology developed and animated by the award-winning Nexus Studios.
Based on The Gruffalo, the best-selling picture book written by Julia Donaldson and illustrated by Axel Scheffler, families follow clues on an interactive trail and track signs for their favourite characters.
The self-led trail is packed with fun facts about the forest animals with fantastic activities along the way. Once families have spotted the characters, they can use the app to bring the 3D character animations to life, interact with the characters and film and take photographs of the experience.
Videos and photos are automatically added to the device’s gallery.
Taking family forest walks to new heights, the app mixes new technology with the real world, encouraging children to get exploring, firing their imaginations and giving them a forest experience like no other.
A Gruffalo Spotters 2 UK trail pack will be available to buy on site which includes an activity leaflet full of fun facts and activities, Gruffalo Mask and paws, a nature spotters game, stickers as well as a crayon and pencil.

I read a lot of negative reviews for this but it worked really well for us. Took me a while to realise the images and videos are saved in the files of my phone and not in the app. I'd recommend getting another person to do the interacting with the character so your child can watch the activity.
Worked okay for us today. Didn't crash once, easy to record video just press record when it starts. We did the videos then my 5 year old watched them afterwards.recommended.
Very good as an idea, but flawed. Very important to download in advance at Kielder as there is little signal. The app itself worked okay to start with but didn't work with some of the trigger symbols. I cleaned one of them which then seemed to work, I couldn't get the snake one to work at all. Also, when we did the owl one perhaps I didn't complete it properly, so it wasn't acknowledged, even though the videos recorded, so guess which adult muppet had to go back and flap on his own to resolve it...! Nice idea, normally works, but has bugs.
The app wouldn't pick up the signs without the capture circle overlapping the target. In between the app just crashing the animations were good but the option to override the gestures needs to be there all the time. Would be good that when the app doesn't pick up the sign that you could select the target anyway. Good idea but needs a bit more UX with a parent and toddler using it.
Oh dear. It seems like a great app and it was exciting to think we could use this on the trail. Unfortunately we only got it to work with Mouse, then it crashed out. Restarted the app, continued on but it wouldn't scan the remaining circles despite multiple attempts and plenty of patience. At the very end we did get it to work with the Gruffalo circle, in the last part of the walk. In addition, any pictures we did capture were out of focus! Not recommended.
