Thomas Grayston SoftwareAbout this app
Note Rush: Learn to Read Music is an educational game that effectively addresses the challenge of improving note reading speed and accuracy for music enthusiasts, making it a valuable tool for music teachers and students alike. Compared to other apps in the Game Music category, Note Rush stands out with its focused approach and well-received user rating of 4.2/5. However, its relatively low download numbers and lack of in-app purchases or ads may indicate a limited user base. The app's simplicity and effectiveness make it a strong contender in its niche, but its paid model may deter some potential users.
Pros
- With a high user rating of 4.2/5 and over 10,000 downloads, Note Rush demonstrates a strong social proof and a well-designed user experience.
- The app's paid model, priced at $8.99, ensures an ad-free experience, which is beneficial for users seeking an uninterrupted learning environment.
- Note Rush requires no permissions, which is a significant advantage in terms of user privacy and security, as it minimizes potential data collection and misuse.
- The developer's website and email provide a clear channel for feedback and support, indicating a commitment to user satisfaction and app maintenance.
- The app's offline capability, implied by the lack of internet permissions, allows users to practice note reading anywhere, making it a convenient tool for music students.
Cons
- The app's limited download numbers may indicate a smaller user community and less diverse feedback, potentially limiting the app's ability to adapt to a wide range of user needs.
- The paid model, while beneficial for an ad-free experience, may deter some potential users who prefer free alternatives or are unsure about the app's value proposition.
- The lack of in-app purchases or a free version may limit the app's accessibility for users who cannot afford the upfront cost or prefer to try before buying.
- The app's compatibility with Android 7.0 and above may exclude users with older devices, potentially limiting its reach among less tech-savvy or budget-conscious users.
Best for: The ideal user for Note Rush is a music student or enthusiast, likely between the ages of 10 and 30, with a basic understanding of music theory, seeking to improve their note reading skills in a structured and engaging manner, and willing to invest in a paid educational tool to achieve their musical goals.
Developer Description
A favorite of music teachers, Note Rush boosts note reading speed and accuracy.
How it Works
---------------------------
Note Rush is like a virtual flash card deck for all ages that listens to you play each note, giving instant feedback and awarding stars based on speed and accuracy of note identification.
Race against the clock to improve your performance or hide the timer to gently engage those just starting out with the staff.
Includes built-in levels for piano and a range of other instruments as well as custom level design.
What makes Note Rush Different?
---------------------------
- Play On Your Instrument
Note reading is best learnt in the context of how you identify and play each note - on your acoustic or MIDI instrument.
- Designed for Teachers
...and not as a replacement for them! Create fully customizable note sets and easily send them home to students.
- Fun Themes
Engage with fun themes that don't get in the way of learning, or opt for traditional notation.
Landmarks: The best way to learn your notes
---------------------------
Note Rush fits with all teaching methods, whether you favor a purely intervallic approach or use traditional mnemonics! We promote learning key landmark notes then reading adjacent notes intervallically for the best results in learning to read piano notation.
Note Rush features a unique landmarks-based hints system (optional) that highlights nearby landmark notes to read intervallically from. Over time students naturally move from reliance on landmarks to a more intrinsic staff-to-keyboard association.
Preset and Custom Levels
---------------------------
Use preset note ranges or create your own set of levels to suit your teaching style. Create a personalized level to target a particular student’s needs.
- Individual Note Selections
- Sharps and Flats
- Treble, Bass or Grand Staff (alto and tenor coming soon)
- Up to Six Ledger Lines
- Send custom note reading drills using App Links or QR Codes

One of my go-to apps as a piano teacher! Students enjoy it and are always delighted by the seasonal themes. I love the simplicity of the app. It's not trying to do too many things at once. The pre-defined levels cover 99% of what I need, and for those instances when I need a student to review just the notes they're struggling with, It's super easy to whip up a custom level on the fly. Thank you!
This game is pretty good and I would recommend it to all people who are learning piano because it has multiple levels! Although sometimes it freezes up and adds time to my score...😜
Simple app that stops short of its potential. Pros: picks up the sound well enough, can use an acoustic piano, game like (if you're a kid) Cons: game like (if you're an adult), game resets after you've hit every not once. You have to reset every 15-30 seconds depending on how fast you are at the "game". Really needs more modes for better training... such as infinite practice. Or a game type where you go as long as you can without a mistake. Has it helped me... yes. Would I buy again? Unlikely
Consistent bug of not detecting the right note. Will pick up every wrong note, including one above and one below, save for the right one. Makes app pretty unusable, which is a shame
You seriously need to update this or refund my money back. I bought this app to help my daughter with her piano. I see her playing the right notes yet it's still showing up as the wrong note.
