About this app
Learn to transcribe signs in various systems and orthographies.
This app can help you learn and practice different sign language transcription systems and orthographies.
Check out the tracing practice and quiz modes. Currently, there are handshapes from HamNoSys, ASLWrite, Stokoe Notation, Sutton SignWriting, and one handshape font.
HamNoSys, AKA the Hamburg Notation System, was designed for phonetic transcription of sign language in minute detail for research purposes. Stokoe Notation was the first system for writing ASL, and Sutton SignWriting is meant to be a practical orthography for many sign languages.
ASLWrite was designed as a practical orthography for American Sign Language.
There is also a handshape lookup tool, which can be used to search for a handshape using one system and fine the equivalent handshapes from the others here.
Other features of these systems are coming soon. Orientation is available for HamNoSys and planned for Stokoe and Sutton SignWriting. Location, movement, and non-manuals are also planned for the future.
This app is still in development! You are free to try out the different features. Mobile app versions are coming soon. If you encounter an issue you can help improve this tool by reporting it here: https://github.com/SignLanguageTranscription/SignLanguageTranscription.github.io/issues
