About this app

Developer Description

The magazine for politics, culture, book reviews, and ideas.

Since 1963, The New York Review of Books has been the place where the world’s leading authors, scientists, educators, artists, and political leaders turn when they wish to engage in a spirited debate on literature, politics, art, and ideas with a small but influential audience that welcomes the challenge. Each issue addresses some of the most passionate political and cultural controversies of the day and reviews the most engrossing new books and the ideas that illuminate them.

The print edition of The New York Review of Books, included in the app, is published 20 times a year. The app also includes all of our online-only content. Articles can be bookmarked for later reading, and the app includes a link to browse our shop, The Reader’s Catalog.

Current print and online-only subscribers receive full access to the app through existing website login credentials (email and password). The app may also be purchased directly through the app store. Purchases made through the app store do not include access to The Review’s website and complete archive.

Has some interesting articles but the titles are so arbitrary that it is really hard to tell from the title whether an article is likely to be of interest. I'm usually short of time, so if I have 10 minutes I want to pick one article, quickly, read and have something to mull over in the back of my mind for the rest of the day. If the titles don't let me filter, I spend my time poking into articles that turn out to be of no real interest and I have just wasted my time in a most unsatisfying way.

Apparently, this is why they sell print and digital separately or bundled at a higher price. Only magazine that I know of which offers an app that doesn't allow print subscribers (which used to be a bigger priority to publications) to access it as part of the script. I give it 2 stars because the app itself might be a 4 or 5 but complicated access rules places it lower. Wouldn't let me give an Incomplete.

Great content, but a junky app. The worst problem is the "mobile-optimized" menu from which you select pieces to read. On the menu, you can't identify the titles of the books reviewed or book authors. The menu only states the titles of the pieces, which are typically more whimsical than descriptive. You end up having to click through every article to figure out which to read. Another problem is that block quotes don't appear indented, so you just have to guess where they begin and end.
