Decent enough for a local news site... I am guessing at least some of the complaints are due to being forced to create a free account to keep on reading some of the articles.

Notifications are very annoying. The text describes a new story but selecting it always takes me too an old story, sometimes days old. I then have to search for the new story and can't always find it. A big pain!

Doesn't crash for me, but mobile experience is too simplistic and has poor UX. I subscribed, loaded the app, and pretty quickly decided to cancel my subscription, because the app makes consuming the news quite difficult. The design, particularly on mobile, is bad, take a look at top newspapers like NYTimes, or even the local SF Chronicle. There isn't a quick and easy way to get to important things like election coverage, or filter out stuff I don't want like sports (which eats the front page).

The search function is fully broken. Typing a text search is painful and tedious. Its constantly double-typing or trying to predict the search. Tried this on three different android phones and made sure my own phones autocomplete and word suggestions was disabled. The ads are annoying and full of political drivel that makes the ap frustrating. Would be great if the Mercury would put some filters on the ads displayed through their app. There are very dishonest and sketchy advertisements.
