When they met... they held a retreat for forty days to study these rules that drew and changed the course of Maulana Jalaluddin Rumi's life. He turned from a religious scholar to a mystic.

The novel The Forty Rules of Love intertwine two stories in two different times, Ella, the wife who suffers from depression after years of marriage and the birth of three children and the constant care of her family and her husband, who no longer binds them love. In her work, he presented her with a novel by an obscure writer from the Netherlands, entitled (The Sweet Unbelief). She had to present a critique of that Sufi novel that talks about the life of a Sufi dervish figure who lived in a long time and is the author of the novel.
The novel begins from the end, on the tongue of (the killer), any reader can suffer a distraction before events settle down.

The novel adopts the approach of love as presented by the mystics and dervishes in their lives, the divine love that transcends everything, the heavenly love, and the love between two friends that completes the other and becomes its fullness and its mirror. The novel The Forty Rules of Love goes to a vision that (the scholar Jalal al-Din al-Rumi) and (Shams al-Din al-Tabrizi) see separately, that makes each one of them somewhere looking for a companion, who completes the life of the other. Until they meet, Shams al-Tabrizi has completed in his presence the message of Rumi and makes him a poet and introduces into his mystical life new things that he had not known before.


She abandons everything and joins the author of the novel, after she got to know him via e-mail and found the purity and purity of this author and his resemblance to his problematic predecessor, Tabrizi, who stirred up storms wherever he went and traveled.
The author of the novel “Sweet Infidelity” “The Forty Rules of Love” Zahara, who converted to Islam and became “Aziz,” hangs a necklace on his chest with a sun on it to remind him of the sun of Tabrizi. Doctors warn him of death due to his illness with skin cancer.
Ella discovers with him that Tabrizi has not died for 800 years, but his controversial personality is repeated in all ages, and here is Zahara the Dutchman who converted to Islam imitating Tabrizi with his wisdom and philosophy.
Perhaps Al-Rumi is the example of the examples in his time when he married a Christian woman and did not marry another, while Ella Judaism adores a Christian author who finally converted to Islam and died of an unexpected illness and was buried in Konya next to the tomb of Rumi.
My opinion of the novel:
I can say that the novel's intelligence was the multiplicity of voices and scenes in it, and Elif Shafak's ability to move between characters and speak in her tongue smoothly without affecting or causing a defect or scratch in the sound of our novel. The polyphony was heading for a distinct situation when the narrator moved between two characters and spoke in their tongues with all fluency.

Although it is clear that the writer worked very hard in presenting the novel The Forty Rules of Love, it seems so evident that it tells a story from the Islamic heritage that is far from its environment - but I imagined it better, however, as a reader I am not completely satisfied! I felt confined to a lot of places I could not find with us its presence!
