FLUIDILI, fluence en lecture vVARY

The FLUIDILI application was developed by a team of researchers from Grenoble-Alpes University and the University of Burgundy, and has been scientifically validated with several hundred CE1 students from mainland France and overseas. . It is intended for children who are already readers and who need to improve their fluency. So from CE1 to middle school.

FLUIDILI trains reading fluency (speed and prosody) through readings heard and repeated in karaoke. Reading fluency is a necessary prerequisite for good understanding of the texts read. Fluent and automated reading allows the reader to concentrate on the meaning of the text. Beyond having precise and rapid decoding, a fluent reader is also a reader who is able to rely on the text to offer a reading with phrasing and expressiveness adapted to the text and the intentions of the author. Fluency requires decoding, speed, phrasing and expressive skills that are important to work on in class.

The objective of FLUIDILI is to train fluency in all its dimensions, decoding, speed, phrasing and expressiveness, independently. Students can work on oral fluency independently on a daily basis.

How does FLUIDILI work?

FLUIDILI is a playback karaoke. The student will practice reading a text, adapted to their reading level, repeatedly by synchronizing with an expert reader whom they will hear and using the simultaneous highlighting appearing on the screen.

This principle allows the child to benefit from a model (the expert reader) with phrasing and expression adapted to the text, which he can imitate. They will also benefit from visual aid through the highlighting of various units of the text (syllables, words, syntactic groups and breathing groups) depending on their level.

Another originality of FLUIDILI is to offer a reciprocal evaluation of the readings of other children: the child is a reader and a listener; the educational project is collective and involves the whole class.

What is the content of FLUIDILI?

The application is designed for the student to complete a course of 30 sessions of approximately 15 minutes which will allow them to develop both the way of reading and the complexity of the texts. The children will read 10 different texts (descriptive, narrative, documentary) of increasing difficulty. Each text will be read several times, repeatedly, in karaoke playback. Expert reading and highlighting are also of increasing difficulty: 4 reading modes are available. At each session, the last reading is recorded to then be listened to and evaluated by a friend.

A scientifically validated application

Experiments were carried out in numerous CE1 classes in the academies of Grenoble, Guyana and Mayotte. In the last study, a first group of students used FLUIDILI (332 students) and an active control group used another English educational application (307 students). The results show that students using FLUIDILI progress more in expressiveness than those in the control group. The application allows autonomous, regular and aloud training in reading fluency, particularly in expressiveness.
