The McLaren Senna is named for somebody special, and Formula One fans have appreciated that tribute to the real-life legend. The McLaren Senna is the ultimate, timeless tribute to the man who defined a company’s Formula One teams. The car was named in honor of Brazilian Formula 1 racer Ayrton Senna, paying homage to his successes at McLaren Formula One Team from 1988-1993. Continuing on from the GTR story, the McLaren Senna GTR was created to provide McLarens fastest lap times outside of Formula One. The production-spec Senna GTR unveiled two years later, has different bodywork to the concept, a different set of wings, toned-down aerodynamics, and uses a race-spec double-clutch gearbox to allow faster gear changes, revised suspension systems, and Pirelli racing tires in an effort to make it the fastest non-F1 car that McLaren Automotive has created to achieve faster lap times. McLarens engineers say that the Senna is the most direct, responsive car that they have ever built, built especially to set new track benchmarks.

These attributes are highlighted in some of McLarens external features for the Senna GTR, which include its extensively increased dip planes and front splitter, and integrated rear wing endplates and rear diffuser, all combined to lend the car an unstoppable character, while also offering incredible aerodynamic performance. Legalized for street use, yet not sterilized to fit, the McLaren Senna is a manifestation of McLarens DNA at its most extreme, creating a sheer bond between the car and driver. Nothing else matters except to provide the most intense racing experience on the track, with the McLaren Senna.

The McLaren F1 focused on driver involvement, the P1 hypercar chose to incorporate hybrid technologies, whereas the Senna sets out to deliver the most capable road-focused track-focused vehicle yet built. The McLaren Senna also houses a twin-turbocharged, twin-supercharged V8 - McLarens most powerful internal combustion motor for a road car. The McLaren Senna weighs 1,198 kilograms, the same as McLarens famous F1, thanks to its extensive use of carbon fiber.

The brakes are the most sophisticated yet fitted into a McLaren road car. The Senna also uses a modified version of the McLarens Race Active Chassis Control II system, incorporating an Active Double Wishbone setup from the P1 with hydro-diffusers, which allows variable ride height, damping, and stiffness modes depending on a driver's desired set-up. The McLaren Senna GTR is powered by a McLarens 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8 that produces a raw power output of around 814 horsepower--about 25 horses more than what the street-going Senna produces--at 7250 rpm and 590 pound-feet of torque at 5,500 rpm.
