The Holy Bible by John Nelson Darby (originator of the doctrine of dispensationalism): from Greek and Hebrew. J.N. Darby also translated the Bible into English and German. It is one of the French Bibles whose text is currently in the public domain.
Old Testament and New Testament
Old Testament
In Christianity, the Old Testament or Old Covenant1 refers to the collection of writings in the Hebrew Bible, the Hebrew texts that predate the life of Jesus, which is recounted in the New Testament (Greek: Ἡ Παλαιὰ Διαθήκη / Hê Palaià Diathếkê).
The Old Testament brings together Jewish religious writings. For Christians, the Bible consists of the Old Testament and the New Testament. The Old Testament comprises the following parts: the Pentateuch, the historical books, the Hagiographa, and the Prophets.
The word testament comes from the Greek word διαθήκη / diathếkê: testament, contract, agreement), translated into Latin as testamentum (testament; testimony). The Greek word has a broader meaning than the Latin word: that of contract or "covenant."
It is difficult to pinpoint the moment when the Old Testament was established as a canon by Christians. In the 2nd century, the Church of Rome decided to reject the heresy of Marcion, who claimed to remove all references to the Old Testament writings. It was only later that the canon of the Christian Bible was established.
New Testament
The New Testament (Greek: Ἡ Καινὴ Διαθήκη / Hê Kainề Diathếkê) is the collection of writings relating to the life of Jesus and the teachings of his first disciples, which were recognized as "canonical" by Christian authorities after a process lasting several centuries.
The word "testament" comes from the Greek word διαθήκη (diathếkê: "will, contract, agreement"), translated into Latin as testamentum (testament, testimony). The Greek word has a broader meaning (that of contract) than the Latin word. Some therefore prefer to translate it as Covenant.
Christians consider the Bible to be composed of the Old Testament (writings written before Jesus) and the New Testament.
List of books included in the New Testament
The New Testament includes, in the order of the Western canon:
- the four canonical Gospels (Gospels according to Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John);
- the Acts of the Apostles;
- 14 Epistles, most of which are attributed to Paul of Tarsus;
