Solid Starts: Baby Food App v3.6.12
Solid StartsAbout this app
The Solid Starts: Baby Food App effectively addresses the challenge of introducing solid foods to infants by providing a comprehensive First Foods Database and guidance on baby-led weaning, making it an invaluable resource for new parents seeking to navigate this critical developmental phase. This app stands out in the Parenting category due to its high user rating and download numbers, indicating a strong reputation and social proof. Compared to alternatives, Solid Starts offers a unique combination of a database-driven approach and community support, which sets it apart. However, its reliance on in-app purchases for full functionality might be a deterrent for some users.
Pros
- With over 1,000,000 downloads and a 4.8/5 user rating, Solid Starts demonstrates a high level of user satisfaction and trust, suggesting that the app is both useful and well-maintained.
- The app's lack of permissions requests is a significant advantage, as it implies a strong commitment to user privacy and minimal data collection, which is particularly important for an app used by parents for their children.
- The presence of a developer website and email for support indicates a level of transparency and accountability, making it easier for users to report issues or seek help when needed.
- The absence of ads within the app contributes to a cleaner and less distracting user experience, allowing parents to focus on the information and tools provided without interruptions.
- Regular updates, as indicated by the version history, suggest that the developer is actively engaged in improving the app, which is crucial for keeping up with the latest research and best practices in infant nutrition.
Cons
- The app's monetization model, which includes in-app purchases ranging from $1.99 to $99.99, might be seen as aggressive or expensive by some users, potentially limiting access to its full range of features for those on a tighter budget.
- Despite its high rating, some users might find the lack of a free, fully functional version limiting, as the in-app purchases are necessary to unlock the app's complete potential.
- There is a potential concern regarding the dependency on internet connectivity for the database access, which could limit the app's usability in areas with poor internet coverage, though this is not explicitly stated as a requirement.
- The app's effectiveness heavily relies on user input and engagement, which might not be suitable for all learning styles or preferences, potentially leaving some users seeking more guided or automated solutions.
Best for: The ideal user for Solid Starts: Baby Food App is a new parent or caregiver, likely in the 25-45 age range, who is technically proficient enough to navigate a mobile app and is seeking a trusted, community-supported resource to guide them through the process of introducing solid foods to their infant, valuing evidence-based information and community feedback to make informed decisions about their child's nutrition and health.

Solid Starts: Baby Food App users say on Google Play
Very helpful app for first starting solids. I especially love the visuals on how to serve the food as baby grows and new recipe ideas. It's always fun to read about and learn new foods, which the extensive database makes easy to search through. Thank you for having such a wide variety of cultural foods! It's nice to see foods we grew up eating getting represented and learning about what kind of nutrients they offer baby.
I've been using the app for 2 months. I love the info provided on all the foods, but the tracker is too slow and clunky. Obvious foods are missing (only 4 oils are included) and there's no way to add them manually. Recently tried foods should be at the top of the list in the tracker for ease of access. I end up logging foods in Huckleberry and adding them in Solid Starts days later. Also, it's too bad the reactions list is only about allergies, not how well the food was received.
Content is great but app functionality is poor. I'm not thrilled with that for the cost paid. Searching and button selection is very delayed, editing a day is confusing, and the food list to select from in the tracker is weird. It should just list your recent foods instead of random things we will never eat. It seems to try to do that then glitches and resets to random, odd foods.
Foods seem biased. I've noticed that the meals lean heavily into the vegan, vegetarian, and whatever else, but to find good meat-based dishes is way more difficult. they say iron is important for infants... and then most of the recipes are oatmeal or something non-meat based (??) beef has a lot of iron, hello! I can understand accommodating people that force their habits on kids, but whatever happened to a traditional meal - and why is it so bloody hard to search for it?
Don't bother downloading. I downloaded it a few months ago to track what my son was eating. It was very useful, but the recent update requires you to pay for really anything that was useful. The only feature available is seeing how to prepare foods based on their age, which you can honestly probably Google.
