Emby for Android users say on Google Play
Aug2025 update; Emby is a stable in our house now, along with Immich and Home Assistant. Just upgraded to Premiere due to all the community efforts, and particularly linking another paid service via STRM files and DLNA to my new Yamaha Amp. Thanks a million Devs.
This is a huge improvement on the existing Android TV app. Far more polished in terms of design and with a lot of customisation options. Kudos to the Emby team.
Don't get me wrong, I LOVE emby, but the small bugs can be really frustrating. Whenever I stop playback and close the app, it starts playing again which is really annoying because the app skipped forward 6 episodes on my show, and then there's other bugs like if you're in landscape and the screen turns off and you turn it back on it rotates to portrait mode and if I rotate to portrait it goes to landscape and landscape goes to portrait and it's really annoying please fix it thanks
I love emby and I've been a Premium user for a long time but there's this bug for months now in the Android app that's just super annoying. If you have "auto play next episode" turned off and you're watching a show and you happen to fall asleep it will stop at the "watch next episode" Screen (as expected) BUT the display won't ever turn off. So you wake up in the middle of the night because your android tablet is blasting light straight to your face because you fell asleep.
Years ago Emby was a pretty solid media server. They've really destroyed a lot though and have been moving backwards for the last couple of years. Without even getting into the server issues, this new "unified" Android app that they've been trying to push on people is the final nail in the coffin. Its mobile-first approach leaves big screen users behind, and the whole thing just feels jittery and poorly made when navigating on Android TV. It's a huge step backwards and only getting worse.
