About this app

Emby for Android TV solves the problem of organizing and streaming personal media libraries to Android TV devices, benefiting most those who have large collections of videos and music. Compared to alternatives in the Video Players category, Emby stands out with its robust media management features and user-friendly interface. However, its lack of native support for certain file formats might be a drawback for some users. Overall, Emby's strong focus on media organization and streaming makes it a solid choice for users seeking a comprehensive media player.

Pros

  • With over 500,000 downloads and a 3.8/5 user rating, Emby for Android TV has demonstrated its reliability and user satisfaction, indicating a well-designed and functional app.
  • The app's developer, Emby Media, has a professional website and provides a clear email address for support, which enhances trust and accountability.
  • Emby's in-app purchases are reasonably priced, ranging from $1.99 to $6.49 per item, offering users flexible options to enhance their experience without being overly aggressive in monetization.
  • The app requires no permissions, which is a significant advantage in terms of user privacy and security, as it minimizes the risk of data collection or misuse.
  • Emby's regular updates, such as version 2.1.23g, indicate an active development process, which is crucial for maintaining compatibility with the latest Android versions and addressing user feedback.

Cons

  • One concern is the potential lack of support for certain media file formats, which could limit the app's usability for users with diverse media collections.
  • Although Emby Media provides a professional support channel, some users might find the in-app purchase model confusing or inconvenient, especially if they are not accustomed to paying for additional features.
  • The app's requirement for Android 5.0 or higher might exclude users with older devices, limiting its accessibility to a broader range of Android TV users.
  • There is a risk that the free version might have limitations that are not clearly communicated, which could lead to user dissatisfaction if expectations are not met.

Best for: The ideal user for Emby for Android TV is likely a tech-savvy individual or family with a large, organized media library, looking for a comprehensive and user-friendly media player that can efficiently stream their content to their Android TV device, and who values privacy and is willing to pay for additional features to enhance their viewing experience.

I tried Kodi and Plex first, but Emby puts them to shame, doing everything I need and more. The dev team is awesome and responds to all user concerns in their support forum. Check it out for yourself and see.

I love the interface, but all of my content is stored in .iso files, which don't seem to have stable playback support. DVD .iso files sometimes play, but can be choppy, and Blu-Ray .iso files won't play all. Is there any chance of this working properly in a future release. I'd hate to have to convert my entire video collection to .mkv due to the time involved. Currently I use Kodi for playback from my Emby server, and that works fine.

Please fix resume. Pause, come back 10 min later, and resume simply doesn't work. It's crippling. Never seems to remember where playback stopped. Pages don't update with the correct resume point. You guys must know this. Fast forward doesn't work. Just stops playing. Really poor

Worked great for about a year, then stopped playing the last several minutes of TV episodes. Audio keeps playing, but the picture freezes and it won't seek forward. Tried restarting the app, rebooting the box, clearing cache, etc. I paid for this app and now it doesn't even work. Will be switching to Jellyfin if this remains unfixed.
