About this app

The MIDI Controller app effectively solves the problem of needing a universal and simple MIDI controller by allowing users to utilize their phone as a controller, which is particularly beneficial for musicians and music producers who require a portable and convenient solution. This app stands out in the Music And Audio category due to its straightforward approach and the fact that it doesn't require any permissions, making it a secure choice. However, its $9.99 price tag might be a barrier for some, especially considering the limited functionality compared to more comprehensive music production apps. Despite this, the app's positive user rating of 3.8/5 indicates a generally satisfied user base.

Pros

  • The app's ability to function as a universal MIDI controller without requiring any permissions is a significant advantage, ensuring that users' data and device security are not compromised.
  • With over 10,000 downloads and a good user rating, the app has demonstrated social proof and a level of trust among its users, suggesting that it is a viable option for those in need of a simple MIDI controller.
  • The absence of ads and in-app purchases means that users can enjoy an uninterrupted experience, which is a significant plus for an app aimed at creative professionals who value focus and productivity.
  • The developer's provision of an email address for support, askdavidschindler@gmail.com, indicates a level of commitment to customer service and willingness to address user concerns.
  • The app's simplicity and lack of bloatware make it accessible to users who might be overwhelmed by more complex music production software, providing a straightforward solution for basic MIDI control needs.

Cons

  • The $9.99 price point may be seen as steep by some potential users, especially considering that there are free or lower-cost alternatives available that offer similar functionality, which could limit the app's appeal to a wider audience.
  • The app's limited feature set, while a benefit in terms of simplicity, might not be sufficient for advanced users who require more complex MIDI control capabilities, potentially limiting its usefulness for professional applications.
  • The lack of information about the developer's website and more detailed support resources might raise concerns about the app's long-term support and updates, which could impact user confidence in the app's future viability.
  • The requirement for Android 8.0 or higher might exclude users with older devices, limiting the app's compatibility and accessibility to a broader range of Android users.

Best for: The ideal user for the MIDI Controller app is a musician, music producer, or DJ who requires a simple, portable, and secure MIDI control solution for their creative work, likely with a moderate level of technical skill and familiarity with MIDI technology, and who values ease of use and reliability over advanced features and complex functionality.

Developer Description

Use your phone as a universal, simple USB midi controller.

Your phone turns into an USB Midi controller for controlling software (eg audio workstations / DAWs) and hardware (eg synthesizer, light show, ...) via USB.

All common MIDI information can be sent,
including all music notes and all possible control change values.
Build your own workspace from scratch.
All controls are fully customizable.

- Simple, customizable keyboard with speed and channel controls
- Customizable buttons (one-shot and on / off) for sending control information
- Customizable sliders
- Multiple view options (therefore also optimal for tablets)

More than 500 buttons and sliders can be added
which work on 16 different midi channels. That way, you can create your own interface with any controls you need.

Control your DAW, your synthesizer, or whatever you want to work with.

Example DAW (Digital Audio Workstation):
Add a new midi control
Assign these to functionality in your audio program via midi mapping.
MIDI controller can now control the assigned functionality - eg volume slider, effect ON / OFF, recording start and much more.

Privacy

Given that the MIDI Controller app does not request any permissions, the risk of data collection or security breaches appears to be minimal. However, users should still be cautious when connecting their device to external MIDI equipment or software, ensuring that all connections are secure and trusted. It's also advisable to keep the app and the operating system up to date to protect against any potential vulnerabilities that might be discovered in the future.

Tips

To get the most out of the MIDI Controller app, users should first ensure that their device is properly connected to their MIDI equipment or software, and then explore the app's settings to customize the control layout to their specific needs. Additionally, users can optimize the app's performance by closing other resource-intensive apps and ensuring their device has sufficient battery life, especially during extended music production or performance sessions. Regularly checking for updates can also help in leveraging any new features or improvements added by the developer.

So far this app seems almost perfect for my needs, with the only drawback being that it seems unable to also receive values. I wanted it to not only control but also to "be controlled". For example, if I use the app to change a slider on a software running on my computer, when I drag the slider on the app, the slider on the software follows it. What I also wanted, though, is for the slider on the app to also move if I drag the slider on the software, similar to those physical MIDI controllers with motorized faders. I guess it shouldn't be hard to implement (if it's not already in there), and I've seen other apps with this functionality. And if it was able to connect wirelessly, say for example using rtpMIDI, it would help a lot.

Works pretty alright for me, simple but real easy to connect to your music software program. I dunno, maybe having something like a 'Bluetooth connection option; that'd be pretty awesome. However this being said, still I rather enjoy using the app! Absolutely serves its purpose, for sure.

Pretty good design, intuitive. Midi setup very easy. But custom buttons can only send CC messages, it's missing the ability to create a button that sends a program change. Also the UI for picking from the 128 different CC message types is painful, should just be a dropdown but instead you have to hit forward/back a zillion times.

Poorly documented. Could not work out how to send a program change message.

Updated review from 4 to 1 star. No updates in over a year and it's unusable with the Pixel 4A.
