Long time subscriber here. I have tried almost all of the other summary apps. Currently, Shortform excels in its offerings, yet I've observed a trend toward increasingly brief summaries. Personally, I believe the ideal summary should span around 45 to 60 minutes, allowing for a thorough exploration of the book's concepts. If summaries are reduced to just 15 or 20 minutes overviews, Shortform risks losing its distinctive edge in the market. I will pay for a great book summary, not an overview.

The selection is pretty good and customizability is nice. The voice pitch doesn't get messed up when you speed up the audio. Using the audio combined with the text to help increase reading speed makes it even more productive. I didn't get a chance to use it as much as I'd like to. Customer service is great. I wish it was more affordable.

After using this for a couple of months, I've noticed it offers value but still needs improvement. Combining reading and audio helps retention, but when distractions hit, I lose my place and struggle to sync back with the audio. A floating cursor to track the text alongside the audio would fix this issue. I'm sure this idea was discussed during development, and it's a shame it wasn’t implemented. Adding it would significantly enhance the experience.

Very expensive for the poor app design. Extremely long pages for reading on a phone & forgets where you were on the page as soon as you click away - come back and it has defaulted to the top of the page & you have to find your place by scrolling. The only forward/back buttons are at the bottom of pages - makes it very difficult to flip back and forth if you want to visit a previous page. The search function is slow. The book selection is good but not great. Very expensive for what it is.

If I could give zero stars I would. ShortForm charged me $160+ for the upcoming year without any email. No reminder. Just an auto-renewal at a higher price than last year. I only realized it after the charge hit my card. I reached out to support, and they refused to refund me. No help, no flexibility. This is a shady subscription model designed to catch you off guard. I would not recommend ShortForm based on this alone. If you try it, set a reminder to cancel—because they sure won’t remind you.
