About this app
Bees recognize, determine and identify in fields, gardens, forests and meadows
To help identify wild bees, this unique bee app was developed as part of the BienABest research project. The project was funded by the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection (BMU) and the Federal Agency for Nature Conservation (BfN).
The free basic version of this wild bee identification app includes the 101 most common and conspicuous wild bee species in Germany.
The app features close-up photographs of the individual bee species. These photos were taken by Hans Schwenninger using sophisticated focus stacking techniques and then isolated from the background. Another highlight is the identification key created specifically for this app by experienced taxonomists (Erwin Scheuchl and Hans Schwenninger). Even novices can use it intuitively and easily to identify bees by simply selecting individual, meticulously designed characteristics. Many specific physical characteristics, such as body size, tergite bands, number of mandibular teeth, scopa color, and much more, can be selected for identification.
This makes this app the only truly reliable wild bee identification app in Germany.
The Wild Bee ID app BienABest was part of the collaborative project BienABest, which aims to secure and enhance the ecosystem service of wild bee pollination nationwide. The Association of German Engineers (VDI e. V.) coordinated the overall project. The University of Ulm is a partner in the project. This project, funded by the Federal Agency for Nature Conservation (BfN), received support from the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMU) as part of the Federal Programme on Biological Diversity.
Each species profile includes a bee chart showing the bee's entire body from above, as well as a separate image showing the head from the front. The chart can be clicked to enlarge it, revealing even more details of the bee.
You can use the app to create observation lists and export them for personal use or for scientific mapping projects.
This free basic version includes:
• The 101 most common and conspicuous wild bee species in Germany
• 202 images in 101 identification charts with unique, isolated photos
• Species profiles for each species with information on appearance, identification, potential look-alikes, ecology, behavior, and distribution
• Distribution maps for Germany
• Display species names in German or scientific names
• Search function for quickly finding a bee
• Intuitive two-stage identification key for determining both genera/tribes and species
• Display similar species
• Comparison function for directly comparing charts and distribution maps of up to 8 species on iPhone and up to 16 species on iPad
• Location tracking and data recording via GPS
• Creation and export of observation lists
Subscription:
208 additional bee species can be purchased for an annual price of €19.99. These species will also be unlocked for identification after purchase and include detailed descriptions as well as distribution maps for Germany.
