Once there were five blind men who would stand by the roadside every day and beg from people.
One morning, an elephant was being driven along the road where they stood.
When they heard the huge animal in front of them, they asked the driver to stop so that they could touch it.
The first man put his hand on the elephant's tusk. "Well, well!" he said. "This beast is round and smooth and sharp. He is more like a spear than anything else."
The second took hold of the elephant's trunk. "You are wrong," he said. "Anyone who knows anything can see that this elephant is like a snake."
The third man grasped one of the elephant's legs. "Oh, how blind you are!" he said. "It is very plain to me that he is round and tall like a tree."
The fourth was a very tall man, and he took hold of the elephant's ear. "Even the blindest man ought to know that this beast is not like any of those things," he said. "He is exactly like a huge fan."
The fifth man was very blind. He seized the animal's tail. "Oh, foolish fellows!" he cried. "Any man with a grain of sense can see that he is exactly like a rope."
The five blind men then quarreled all day about the elephant. They have to know that what we observe is not nature itself, but nature which has been subjected to our own interpretation.
