In times past there once lived a king and queen who had no child. After a long time, the queen bore a daughter who was so beautiful that the king ordained a great feast.
When the feast drew to an end, the fairies stood forward to present to the child their wonderful gifts.
Then the uninvited evil fairy came and she was so angry that she cast a spell on the infant princess so that she would prick her finger on a spinning wheel needle and die.
One fairy, who hadn't yet given her gift, attempted to weaken the curse: the Princess will fall into a deep sleep for 100 years and be awakened by a kiss from a prince.
Now the king, wishing to save his child from even this misfortune, gave commandment that all the spinning wheels in his kingdom should be burned.
The maiden grew up, adorned with all the gifts of the wise women; and she was so lovely, modest, sweet, kind and clever, that no one who saw her could help loving her.
It happened one day, when she was already fifteen years old, that the king and queen went away and the maiden was left behind alone in the castle.
She wandered around all the nooks and corners of the castle, and walked into a little room with a spinning wheel.
As she began to spin, the inevitable curse was fulfilled. She fell back upon the bed that was there and lay in a deep sleep, and the sleep fell upon the whole castle.
A surrounding hedge of thorns grew thicker every year, until at last the whole castle was hidden from view, and nothing of it could be seen except the weather vane on the roof.
Many long years later, a king's son came into the country. “I do not fear to try,” he said, “I shall win through and see the lovely princess."
He passed through hedge of thorns and opened the door to the little room where she lay. And when he saw her looking so lovely in her sleep, he stooped and kissed her.
She was awakened and looked very lovingly at him. Everyone else in the castle also awoke. Then they were married at a magnificent wedding, and they lived very happily ever after.
