Aurora Notifier v1.3.16
Naturfakta ASAbout this app
Aurora Notifier solves the problem of missing the breathtaking display of aurora borealis by sending notifications when it is visible in the user's location. This app benefits astronomy enthusiasts and nature lovers who want to witness this natural phenomenon. Compared to other weather apps, Aurora Notifier stands out with its specific focus on aurora sightings, but it may fall short in terms of providing a comprehensive weather forecast. With its excellent user rating and moderate download numbers, it has established itself as a reliable tool in the Weather category.
Pros
- Aurora Notifier boasts an excellent user rating of 4.7/5, indicating a high level of user satisfaction with its performance and accuracy.
- The app's moderate download numbers of 100,000+ demonstrate its popularity and social proof, suggesting that it is a trusted and useful tool for aurora enthusiasts.
- The developer, Naturfakta AS, offers a professional website and email support, providing users with a clear channel for feedback and concerns.
- The app's in-app purchase model allows users to access additional features without being bombarded with ads, ensuring a clean and uninterrupted user experience.
- Aurora Notifier's requirement of no permissions makes it a secure and private option for users, as it does not collect or store any sensitive information.
Cons
- The app's limited functionality, solely focused on aurora notifications, may not be enough for users seeking a more comprehensive weather forecast or additional features.
- The in-app purchase model, although non-aggressive, may still be a turn-off for users who prefer free apps without additional costs.
- The lack of information on the app's update frequency and potential bugs or issues may raise concerns about its long-term reliability and performance.
- The app's compatibility with Android 5.0 and above may exclude users with older devices, limiting its accessibility to a wider audience.
Best for: The ideal user for Aurora Notifier is an astronomy enthusiast or nature lover, likely between the ages of 18 and 50, with a moderate level of technical skill, who is interested in witnessing the aurora borealis and is willing to pay for additional features to enhance their experience.
Developer Description
Get notified when you can see aurora borealis - northern lights.
It provides configurable thresholds for local aurora probability, Kp-index (Hp30), solar wind parameters (Bz/Bt) and Kp-level forecast for the evening.
It also allows you to be alerted when other app users nearby have seen the aurora light display. For the alert feature to work, other app users register aurora reports when they are successful hunting and get to see the aurora light display. This has proven to be quite successful.
Many of the app users also upload pictures of northern lights when they see them, and in this app you can see these pictures. You can also see dots on a 3d-globe animation showing where people have just observed the light show. There are users in the US, Canada, Europe, Australia and New Zealand who regularly report their observations and upload pictures.
Although the chances are greater if you live in Alaska, northern Canada, Norway, Sweden, Finland, the southern tip of New Zealand etc, there are also regular opportunities in places like Minnesota, Wisconsin, Washington, Montana, Michigan, Chicago, New York, Scotland, Denmark, Germany, the United Kingdom, France, the Baltics etc.
The premium version which can be bought within the app itself offers some more technical information and graphs of Kp-index predictions, cloud cover and solar wind parameters - and some hidden features.
The app has an associated X account (@aurora_notifier - https://x.com/aurora_notifier) and an Instagram account (@auroranotifierapp - https://www.instagram.com/auroranotifierapp). Consider following those.
Privacy
Given that Aurora Notifier requires no permissions, it poses minimal risk to user privacy and security. However, users should still be cautious when purchasing in-app features and ensure they are using a secure payment method. It is also essential to monitor the app's performance and report any issues to the developer to maintain a safe and reliable user experience.
Tips
To get the most out of Aurora Notifier, users should ensure their device location services are enabled to receive accurate notifications. Additionally, users can optimize the app's performance by closing unnecessary background apps and ensuring their device is running the latest Android version. For first-time setup, users should allow the app to access their location to receive personalized notifications.

Aurora Notifier users say on Google Play
The notifications are timely and accurate. Several times I've received an alert walked out on my porch to see the sky glowing green!
Good app, which shows you the (more or less) current KP index, as well as a forecast. Best thing: it notifies you depending on the settings you choose and lets you know when / if other users have seen auroras in your region. You can set your location manually or by GPS. The interface is a bit basic and sadly there's no info how much the premium version costs. I wanted to support the creator, but having to agree to Google Plays buying contract without being shown the cost was not ideal. :(
Got a notification tonight that it was KP 9! Call my mom and rushed my family out north of town only to find absolutely nothing. Checked it again and it said KP 5. What a crock. If you use this be sure to check with news agencies and other aurora sites to confirm the prediction.
Fairly crappy, but sadly this is one of the better ones - it actually functions. The alerts are awful, and there's no prediction -- you'll be notified the next morning that the KP index was high the previous night
I've had this for a few years and it was useful, but the notifications no longer appear. Better off using Twitter.
