Cheogram (Jabber, Call, Text) v2.19.0-4+playstore
MBOAAbout this app
Cheogram is a communication app that solves the problem of fragmented messaging by supporting the Jabber network and XMPP protocol, allowing users to chat with others across different platforms. This app benefits power users and those invested in the Jabber ecosystem, offering a unique solution compared to more popular, closed messaging apps. However, its low user rating and limited downloads suggest significant issues that may deter casual users. Cheogram stands out with its support for SMS and other gateways, but falls short in terms of user experience and overall polish.
Pros
- Cheogram's support for the Jabber network and XMPP protocol provides a high level of interoperability and flexibility, making it an attractive option for users who value open standards and cross-platform compatibility.
- The app's lack of permissions is a significant advantage, as it minimizes the risk of data collection and ensures a high level of user privacy.
- Cheogram's paid model, without ads or in-app purchases, provides a clean and uninterrupted user experience, free from monetization-driven distractions.
- The developer's website and email support suggest a commitment to user support and feedback, which is essential for an app with a dedicated, albeit niche, user base.
- Cheogram's offline capability, although not explicitly stated, is likely a benefit given the nature of the XMPP protocol, allowing users to queue messages and maintain some functionality without an internet connection.
Cons
- The app's low user rating and limited downloads suggest significant issues with user experience, stability, or functionality, which may deter potential users and undermine the app's overall value proposition.
- The paid model, while providing a clean user experience, may be a barrier to entry for users who are accustomed to free messaging apps, potentially limiting the app's appeal to a wider audience.
- The lack of a free trial or demo version makes it difficult for users to assess the app's suitability before committing to a purchase, which may lead to dissatisfaction and negative reviews.
- The app's compatibility with Android 6.0 and later may exclude users with older devices, limiting its reach and adoption among users with legacy hardware.
Best for: The ideal user for Cheogram is a technically savvy individual, likely between the ages of 25 and 45, who values open standards, cross-platform compatibility, and a high level of control over their messaging experience, and is willing to invest time and effort into setting up and customizing the app to meet their specific needs.

Privacy
Given Cheogram's lack of permissions, users can be confident that their data is not being collected or transmitted without their knowledge. However, users should still be cautious when communicating with others, especially when using public or unsecured networks. To maintain optimal security, users should keep their device and app up to date, and use strong passwords and authentication methods.
Tips
To get the most out of Cheogram, users should start by setting up their Jabber account and configuring their contacts and preferences. Users can also explore the app's settings to customize their experience, such as enabling or disabling certain features, and adjusting their notification preferences. Additionally, users can optimize their battery life by disabling unnecessary features and limiting background data usage.

Thanks it has been rectified
unreliable. constantly disconnecting with no warning. support expects me to keep using it as my primary phone number to do their troubleshooting for them. I've had to abandon this entirely, which is unfortunate as I was trying to find something to replace Google Voice. I would say they're treating me like a beta tester, but betas have fewer problems than this. I feel like I'm an alpha tester
