About this app
German Blitzkrieg through the mountainous Greece & Yugoslavia
Axis Balkan Campaign 1941. From Joni Nuutinen: by a wargamer for the wargamers since 2011. Latest update: December 2025.
If war campaigns with only one front line feel a little bit too monotonic, this setup with Germans tanks attacking from two directions, Italian troops from one, and Hungarian forces meddling in for good measure, might be to your liking.
Historical background: The Axis Balkan Campaign took place in Yugoslavia and Greece in 1941. Germany, preparing for Operation Barbarossa, needs to bail out struggling Italian forces and secure problematic southern sectors in the rear area of the Eastern Front so that the Western Allies cannot threaten crucial Romanian oilfields or launch a disruptive counterattack from Greece.
In the middle of planning for the Greek operation, a coup in Yugoslavia removes them from the Axis Powers, delivering a blow to the prestige of Germany. As a result, Operation 25 (invasion of Yugoslavia) and Operation Marita (invasion of Greece) must be carried out in a quadruple hurry.
Wehrmacht divisions are still moving to staging areas when the offensive is launched; the Yugoslav army is gearing up its huge number of divisions; the Western Allies might send more troops to Greece if there are delays; and German forces need time to prepare for their attack against the Soviet Union. So it is paramount that the victory be quick and decisive.
On the plus side, enthusiastic but not always cutthroat Italian and Hungarian forces will later on join the German offensive with fresh forces, while some Italian armies are already in Albania in a stalemate skirmish with Greek forces.
"The Greeks fought bravely, but they were no match for the German war machine."
- Winston Churchill
FEATURES:
+ Historical accuracy: Scenario mirrors the historical order of battle (OOB).
+ AI has multi layered priorities varying from smaller tactical tasks to strategic aims, and in each game the units have different in-game priorities, so each play-through offers a fairly different experience.
If you’ve ever played classic strategy board games with real world dice and maps, this scenario will resonate. Good luck!
