Australian Geology Travel Maps v2.4.15
David CollinsAbout this app
The Australian Geology Travel Maps app solves the problem of navigating and exploring geological sites in Australia by providing offline access to detailed terrain maps, old mine workings, and locations of gems and gold, making it an invaluable resource for geology enthusiasts, researchers, and adventurers. This app stands out in the Maps And Navigation category due to its specialized focus and high user rating of 4.6/5, indicating a well-designed and useful tool. Compared to alternatives, its offline capability and lack of ads enhance the user experience. However, its limited scope might not appeal to casual users looking for a general-purpose map app.
Pros
- With over 50,000 downloads and an excellent user rating, the app has demonstrated its value to the community, providing social proof of its effectiveness and reliability.
- The app's offline capability is a significant advantage, allowing users to access maps and geological information even in areas with poor internet connectivity, which is often the case in remote areas where geological exploration takes place.
- The developer's reputation, as indicated by the professional website and email provided, suggests a commitment to maintaining and updating the app, which is crucial for an app that relies on accurate and up-to-date geological data.
- The absence of ads enhances the user experience, making the app more enjoyable and less distracting, especially in situations where focus on the terrain and geological features is critical.
- The in-app purchases, priced between $5.99 and $13.99, offer additional content or features that can enhance the app's functionality without being overly aggressive in their monetization strategy.
Cons
- One concern is the potential for the app's specialized focus to limit its appeal to a broader audience, which might affect its long-term viability and the developer's ability to continue updating and expanding its features.
- Although the app does not request any permissions, which is a positive aspect from a privacy standpoint, it might limit the app's ability to offer certain features that require access to device hardware or data, such as GPS location services for real-time navigation.
- The lack of information about what specific data might be collected through in-app purchases or how it is used could raise privacy concerns for some users, even though the app itself does not request permissions.
- Users should be aware that the app's performance and data accuracy depend on the quality of the geological data it is based on, and any inaccuracies or outdated information could affect its usefulness.
Best for: The ideal user for this app is a geology enthusiast, researcher, or adventurer with a specific interest in exploring and understanding the geological features of Australia, likely with a medium to high level of technical skill in using mobile apps for navigation and data analysis, and who values detailed, offline access to specialized geological information.
Developer Description
Offline geology terrain maps, old mine workings, and gem & gold locations
A popular feature is the recording of the route that you have taken through the bush, or while driving to your work area. This runs in the background, even when your screen is blanked out. This is enabled with one tap, and the recording is stopped with one tap. Once completed, the recorded trail is plotted on your screen. There is also the option of the app speaking to you when you cross a geological boundary.
The simple geology maps are rich with contextual data - including shaded relief, roads, towns, tracks, rivers, lakes, geographic names, indigenous land, national parks & provincial parks.
App development, system maintenance and user support is fully-funded by subscriptions - there is no in-app advertising and your data is absolutely PRIVATE.

Really enjoyed using this app over the past year. Unfortunately, over the last few weeks the app stopped working properly due to a bug/glitch. I contacted the developer via email and David instantly made contact with me about the problem. After a few emails back and fourth, David fixed the problems. I am extremely impressed by his efficiency and helpfulness. I am truly grateful to David for getting this back up and running so quickly. Amazing service 👏 Thank you
Very useful app I like it and use it alot, the only thing I think it's missing, is to be able to change the size of the dots? Sometimes in area's, it's almost impossible to click on some locations because the dots are so closely over lapped. Other than that, very cool 👌. Hi, in reply to your reply. I'd like to direct you towards the Herberton tin fields. 😂. What you have suggested is not very effective. It's all good though, nice app. I'll continue to pay the yearly subscription no worries. 👍
not enough options and why oh why is there only a max of 2 layers?? so frustrating.. (and yes I know there is an option for the 3rd layer.. but nothing i want to see) I want to be able to see geology, satellite, and minerals without having to turn something off to see tenements..
Was so keen to have and use this app, but downloading maps didnt work for me, thanks to developer for trying to help, but no idea why it wouldn't work for me, I have a late model high end phone, but downloading maps just freezes,
I cannot access it on my phone as Google keeps sending me around in circles. The app is great for what I do but if Google won't let me get to the mapping system it is an absolutely waste of time trying. It is the most frustrating thing I have ever tried to access on line. Google needs to take a good hard look at what it is doing to their potential customers.
