BetterHelp - Therapy v2.98
BetterHelp - Therapy Made EasyAbout this app
The BetterHelp - Therapy app solves the problem of accessibility to licensed therapists for individuals seeking mental health support, benefiting those who cannot access traditional in-person therapy due to location or mobility constraints. Compared to alternatives in the Health And Fitness category, BetterHelp stands out with its high user rating and extensive reach, indicating a trustworthy and effective service. However, it falls short in terms of offline capability, which might limit its usability in areas with poor internet connectivity. Overall, its strong reputation and lack of ads make it a compelling choice for those seeking online therapy.
Pros
- With over 1 million downloads and a 4.6/5 rating, BetterHelp demonstrates high social proof and user satisfaction, indicating a reliable and effective therapy platform.
- The app's free model without ads enhances the user experience, allowing individuals to focus on their mental health without distractions or additional costs.
- BetterHelp's extensive reach and high rating suggest a large network of licensed therapists, increasing the likelihood of finding a suitable match for each user's needs.
- The developer's reputation, as evidenced by their professional website and contact information, adds to the app's credibility and trustworthiness.
- Regular updates, as indicated by the version history, show the developer's commitment to maintaining and improving the app's quality and functionality.
Cons
- The lack of offline capability might limit the app's usability for individuals in areas with poor or unreliable internet connections, potentially disrupting therapy sessions.
- Although the app does not request any permissions, the nature of online therapy might raise concerns about data privacy and security, particularly regarding sensitive personal information shared during sessions.
- Some users might find the text-based or virtual interaction with therapists less personal or effective than in-person therapy, which could be a drawback for those preferring face-to-face communication.
- The app's dependency on internet connectivity could also lead to issues with latency or connection drops during sessions, affecting the overall quality of the therapy experience.
Best for: The ideal user for the BetterHelp - Therapy app is an individual, likely between the ages of 18 and 65, seeking convenient, accessible, and affordable mental health support, possibly due to geographical constraints, mobility issues, or a preference for the anonymity of online interactions, and who has a basic understanding of how to use mobile apps and is comfortable with technology.

PROFESSIONAL HELP, PERSONALIZED FOR YOU
Facing obstacles alone can be daunting – receiving support and guidance from a professional therapist has been shown to make huge, positive changes to help you overcome personal challenges. When you sign up we’ll match you to an available therapist who fits your objectives, preferences and the type of issues you’re dealing with. Different therapists have different approaches and areas of expertise so we’ll work with you to find the right person who can achieve the best results for you.
LICENSED AND TRAINED THERAPISTS
There are over 20,000 therapists on BetterHelp, each with at least 3 years and 1,000 hours of hands-on experience. They are licensed, trained, experienced, and accredited psychologists (Ph.D./PsyD), marriage and family therapists (MFT), clinical social workers (LCSW), licensed professional therapists (LPC), or similar credentials.
All of our therapists have a Master’s Degree or a Doctorate Degree in their respective fields. They have been qualified and certified by their state professional board and have completed the necessary education, exams, training, and practice.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
After filling out our questionnaire, you will be matched with a licensed therapist based on your needs and preferences. You and your therapist will get your own secure and private “therapy room” where you can message your therapist at any time, from any internet-connected device, wherever you are. You can also schedule a weekly session to speak live with your therapist over video or phone.
You can write or talk about yourself, the things going on in your life, ask questions, and discuss the challenges you’re facing and your therapist will provide feedback, insights, and guidance. This ongoing one-on-one dialogue is the foundation of your work with your therapist.
Together you’ll work towards making a positive change in your life, accomplishing your goals, and overcoming your problems.
HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?
The cost of therapy through BetterHelp ranges from $60 to $90 per week (billed every 4 weeks) but may be higher based on your location, preferences, and therapist availability. Unlike traditional in-office therapy which can cost over $150 for a single session, your BetterHelp membership includes unlimited text, video, audio messaging as well as weekly live sessions. The subscription is billed and renewed every 4 weeks and includes both the use of the secured site and the therapy service itself. You can cancel your membership at any time for any reason.
Privacy
Given that the app does not request any permissions, the primary concern lies in the data collected during therapy sessions, which should be encrypted and protected according to privacy policies. Users should review the developer's privacy policy to understand how their data is handled and ensure they are comfortable with the terms. It's also advisable to use a secure internet connection when accessing the app to minimize the risk of data interception.
Tips
To get the most out of BetterHelp, users should initially take time to thoroughly review the app's features and settings, ensuring they understand how to navigate and utilize the platform effectively. Additionally, establishing a quiet, private space for therapy sessions can enhance the experience, and users should consider scheduling sessions at times when they have a stable internet connection to avoid interruptions. Regularly checking for updates can also ensure access to the latest features and security patches.

Very poor app design. I just signed up and literally the next day I i'm unable to use any feature of the app because I'm blocked by a pop-up claiming I still require an update. I've verified that my app is fully updated to the latest version. I've rebooted my phone and I've reinstalled the app and I'm still not able to proceed. ----- update Resolution came along surprisingly quickly after reaching out to support. Within a few hours the issue was resolved via backend change.
it works as advertised, the UI could be improved. Betterhelp is a great resource, but it's expensive. The option to pause membership is okay. I like the journal suggestions, but the reminders are a bit much and I don't want to turn off my notifications for Betterhelp. Overall, I think it has been helpful
I'm being charged with appointments scheduled
i feel better help didn't really help me. at first i thought the sessions were great but when I contemplated and went through my sessions I felt my therapist was just rushing me. I never got solutions for my troubles more listening but no feedback. Felt like talking to a wall and listening to what I wanted to hear basically. also price to me seemed too expensive to talk to a wall
Even when they are doing nothing for you, absolutely nothing, you are getting charged. 4 weeks of charges, intermittent back and forth, a referral, and not one word of any therapy occurred. Unless you arecan expert at getting therapy and know how to push for what you want or need, you'll just keep getting charged week after week with nothing happening.
