I keep coming back to Speakly after breaks from studying. It gives daily credit for all activities, including listening to the short podcast-like audios. The app is fast now. The listening exercises are great, usually spoken by native speakers. You can also easily language stack (use a second language to learn a third language). Web app allows favoriting words in review. It does seem like some of the audio listening has been adjusted by LLM, unfortunately, since I last used Speakly.

The learning system seems really excellent. There's a huge amount of podcast-like listening material, and the app rewards me for repeat listening. New words are introduced as phrases in context, and I can turn off multiple-choice answers. The music discovery is great. The app itself is a little flaky. Voice recognition doesn't always work, there are a couple bad translations and audio/text mismatches, the app sometimes freezes and has to be force restarted. Overall, worth it.

Sergei Kitaev

One of the main pulls of a paid account - voice recognition exercises for Estonia seems to be half broken. The same phrase said exactly the same way can be considered as "full wrong" or "exactly right". This is confusing and breaks concentration. Repeat learned words exercise is fully self-assessment, you can just use it to cheat yourself out of training. That all on top of grammar notes which are always irrelevant to the word form you are looking at.

Lots of AI content with quite a few mistakes in there. Hard to recommend a language learning app that has errors in it. The process to report said mistakes is extremely cumbersome, which I guess is a factor explaining why so many remain.

Even though everyhting else is pretty nice, definitely better than Duolingo, the voice recognition is exceptionally terrible for this app. I've asked native speakers to do the speaking exercises and the app still says that the words are pronounced wrong. If it wasn't for the fact that Estonian language doesn't have a lot options, I would have dropped this app, as it's extremely frustrating to hear that "hi" was not said correctly every single time for 16 euros a month.
