Beeper: Universal Chat v4.37.4
Automattic, IncAbout this app
Beeper: Universal Chat solves the problem of fragmented messaging by allowing users to chat with anyone on any chat network, making it a versatile tool for those with diverse social circles. It benefits individuals who frequently switch between different messaging platforms, such as professionals or social media enthusiasts. Compared to alternatives in the Communication category, Beeper stands out with its universal chat functionality, but may fall short in terms of feature depth compared to dedicated apps like WhatsApp or Facebook Messenger. Its simplicity and broad compatibility are significant advantages, though.
Pros
- With over 1 million downloads and a 3.7-star rating, Beeper has demonstrated its value to a sizable user base, indicating a level of social proof and reliability.
- The app's developer, Automattic, Inc, is a reputable company known for its contributions to the open-source community, which adds to the app's credibility and trustworthiness.
- Beeper's lack of permissions requests is a significant advantage, as it minimizes potential privacy concerns and suggests a focus on user data protection.
- The app's ability to consolidate multiple chat networks into one interface can greatly simplify a user's messaging experience, reducing the clutter and inconvenience of managing multiple apps.
- The presence of in-app purchases, while potentially a drawback for some, suggests that the developer is committed to maintaining and updating the app, as these purchases can provide a revenue stream for further development.
Cons
- One concern is the potential for the app's simplicity to be a drawback for users seeking more advanced features, such as those found in dedicated messaging apps.
- The in-app purchase model, with prices ranging from $9.99 to $499.99, may be seen as aggressive or expensive by some users, potentially limiting the app's accessibility to those on a budget.
- Despite its universal chat functionality, Beeper may not offer the same level of encryption or security as some dedicated messaging apps, which could be a concern for users prioritizing privacy.
- The app's requirement for Android 8.0 or higher may exclude users with older devices, limiting its reach to those with more recent hardware.
Best for: The ideal user for Beeper: Universal Chat is likely a technically savvy individual, possibly a professional or an active social media user, who frequently interacts with others across multiple messaging platforms and values the convenience of a unified chat interface, but may not require the advanced features offered by dedicated messaging apps.

Privacy
Given that Beeper requests no permissions, it appears to be a relatively safe app in terms of data collection, but users should still be cautious when linking their various chat accounts, as this could potentially compromise account security if the app is compromised. Users should ensure they are downloading the app from a trusted source and keep their device and app updated to protect against potential vulnerabilities.
Tips
To get the most out of Beeper, users should start by linking all their chat accounts to the app, allowing them to consolidate their messaging into one interface. For optimal performance, it's also a good idea to regularly clean up conversations and contacts within the app to prevent clutter. Additionally, exploring the app's settings can reveal options for customizing the user experience, such as notification preferences and theme choices.

Beeper: Universal Chat users say on Google Play
Works great, the free option is fantastic. There are still bugs that need ironing out (e.g. when replying to messages, after hitting send, the message is persistently quoted). The app has allowed me to reduce screen time by keeping me away from "reels" and allowing me to focus on interacting with the people I care about. I think the Beeper team should advertise the app like this too, as I know this is struggle for many. One can keep social apps locked, but still be able to chat.
This is the best app of its kind! Great to organize all chats in one place! I do have some recommendations for improvement. First please look into email integration! Second the subscription fees are just to high. I would love to subscribe for a price of 20-30 for a lifetime. Third right now the only thing truly holding this app back is not having a dedicated contacts tab. If you add a dedicated contacts app similar to Google's this would be a stand alone app! lastly phone call integration pls!
the app recently added the feature to watch reel within the app, which was a feature i was hoping for. kudos to the guys for implementing it. however now when someone sends me a view once or replayable media, I'm asked to use the instagram app which defeats the whole point of beeper.
good idea if it worked, I used beeper back when it could still do iMessage, decided to try it again to compile my chats for ease, it's nice but still seems to have the same issues. It will randomly disconnect from services with no notifications. edit: yes I've had messages not send and say "not sent" with an option to retry, the messages I'm referring to had no notification, I didn't know they hadn't sent until I checked telegram itself, I sent screenshots to chat who confirmed not received.
Was great.. now scheduled sending of messages is behind a pay wall.. also they decided to do this when I had a scheduled message queued for sending that never went out!.. they could have made it so it applied to new messages only. Also $17.99 a month for "limited pro features" is just a complete rip off!.. should NOT be a subscription.
