The New York Times CompanyAbout this app
The Athletic: All Sports News app solves the problem of fragmented sports news by providing in-depth coverage of various sports, including football, basketball, baseball, and hockey, making it an ideal solution for sports enthusiasts seeking comprehensive and high-quality content. This app benefits most those who follow multiple sports and teams, as it offers a one-stop platform for news, highlights, and analysis. Compared to alternatives in the Sports category, The Athletic stands out with its high user rating and reputation for in-depth coverage, but may fall short for users seeking real-time score updates or live streaming. The app's association with The New York Times Company adds to its credibility and trustworthiness.
Pros
- With over 1,000,000 downloads and a 4.5/5 user rating, The Athletic: All Sports News demonstrates strong social proof and a high level of user satisfaction, indicating a well-designed and functional app.
- The app's in-depth sports news and highlights, covering a range of sports, make it a valuable resource for fans seeking detailed analysis and updates, setting it apart from more general sports apps.
- The developer, The New York Times Company, is a reputable and trusted source of news, which enhances the app's credibility and suggests a commitment to quality content.
- The absence of ads within the app provides a clean and uninterrupted user experience, allowing users to focus on the content without distractions.
- The app's regular updates, as indicated by its version history, suggest an active development team committed to improving and expanding the app's features and content.
Cons
- The app's monetization model, which includes in-app purchases ranging from $2.99 to $299.99, may be a barrier for some users, particularly those who are accustomed to free sports news apps or who are not willing to pay for premium content.
- The lack of information about the specific content or features included in the in-app purchases may make it difficult for users to determine the value of these purchases and whether they are worth the cost.
- Some users may find the app's focus on in-depth analysis and news, rather than real-time scores or live streaming, to be a limitation, particularly if they are seeking a more immediate and dynamic sports experience.
- The app's requirement of Android 10 or higher may exclude some users with older devices, potentially limiting its accessibility to a broader audience.
Best for: The ideal user for The Athletic: All Sports News is a sports enthusiast, likely between the ages of 18 and 50, with a strong interest in in-depth sports analysis and news, who values high-quality content and is willing to pay for premium features, and has a medium to high level of technical skill, able to navigate the app's features and settings with ease.

The Athletic: All Sports News users say on Google Play
The quality of articles and consistency is actually very good. I've used it for 18 months and always something interesting to read and learn.
The app functions very well and is easy to navigate. There are only two things that keep if from being five stars for me. One is that it's difficult at times to find articles with multiple authors in the byline. The second is that I wish there were a 'listen to article' feature, like the NYT app has. EDIT: I wish notifications telling me someone replied to my comment took me to the article they responded under, or at least told me which article it was. Right now it just takes me to my account.
The app itself contains video adverts (even though it's a paid subscription) with game highlights etc. There are too many and interrupt the natural flow of trying to read the articles. Stats and charts to back up the points in the article are fine but adverts for Rolex watches are not adding anything other than frustration to the reader.
Good reporters & stories. Horrible IT staff. They are blithering idiots. When using the phone app if a paying subscriber posts a comment to a story that is longer than one paragraph, the phone app by default removes all the paragraph spaces and breaks in the subscriber's comment. So a lengthy 5 paragraph comment, becomes a massive single run-on sentence, that is difficult to read. Subscribers have complained about this ever since NYT took over. But NYT I.T. staff are useless and cannot fix it.
One star because it started glitching today. I haven't changed a single setting, but now it won't let me see stories, just asks me to subscribe. Tried logging out and back in to no avail. I can log in and read things in a browser or through the NYT app, but nada with this one. Almost forgot, it's never (not just since it broke today) let me post a comment through the app.
