About this app

The Guardian - US & World News app solves the problem of staying informed about global news, opinion, and analysis by providing a comprehensive and independent news source. This app benefits individuals seeking in-depth coverage of current events, sports, and podcasts, particularly those interested in international perspectives. Compared to alternatives in the News And Magazines category, The Guardian stands out for its high-quality journalism and minimal permissions required. However, its ad-supported model and in-app purchases might detract from the user experience for some.

Pros

  • With over 5 million downloads and a 4.6/5 user rating, The Guardian app demonstrates exceptional social proof and a high level of user satisfaction, indicating a well-designed and useful application.
  • The app's minimal permissions requirement of zero permissions is a significant advantage, suggesting a strong commitment to user privacy and security.
  • The Guardian's reputation as a trusted news source, combined with its frequent updates, ensures that users receive timely and accurate information on global events.
  • The app's offline capability and accessibility features make it an excellent choice for users who need to stay informed on-the-go or have specific accessibility requirements.
  • The developer's transparency, with a clear website and email for feedback, fosters a sense of accountability and openness, which is rare in the news app category.

Cons

  • The presence of ads and in-app purchases, with prices ranging from $0.99 to $144.99, might be seen as intrusive or expensive by some users, potentially detracting from the overall experience.
  • Despite its strong reputation, The Guardian app may not offer the same level of personalization or customization as some other news apps, which could be a drawback for users seeking tailored content.
  • The app's requirement for varying Android versions might lead to compatibility issues for users with older devices, limiting its accessibility to a broader audience.
  • Some users might find the app's design or navigation less intuitive compared to more modern or sleekly designed news applications.

Best for: The ideal user for The Guardian - US & World News app is an individual aged 25-55, with a strong interest in global news, politics, and current events, who values in-depth analysis and independent journalism, and is likely to appreciate the app's minimal permissions and strong developer reputation.

I really respect the guardian and am a subscriber, which gives me access to the crossword which I've been somewhat addicted to for years. But oh man! I'm sure they don't QA that section of the app at all! Many bugs have been unchanged for years, but just recently a scrolling change means the puzzle can't be moved back into view, and the only way to reset it is to cancel the keyboard and re-edit.

Mini crossword seems to randomly not work. Other than that a fairly good app.

Dear Guardian: Your subscription rates are non-competitive. So long as I am able to subscribe to the Wall Street journal or the New York Times or the Washington Post for anywhere from $30 to $60 a year, I will not be subscribing to your publication. I'm sorry, and it does pain me, as I think you are an excellent paper. GL 🍀

Subscribed for several years but the last price increase was a step too far so unsubscribed. The serious journalism is great but I feel I'm paying extra for increasing amounts of fluff and filler. Shame that the ad supported access has been removed after so long too, depriving people who can't afford to subscribe.

Blackmail to subscribe! Shocked to see so many other 1 star reviews here, but not surprised. How far it has fallen! And now their app keeps begging for a Subscription...I had already SUBSCRIBED but this was not enough $$$. Suddenly I was faced an article limit! No reply and therefore no subscription. The Guardian doesn't read these reviews it seems.
