About this app

Race for the Galaxy solves the problem of finding a engaging and strategic board game experience on Android, benefiting fans of galactic expansion and settlement games. Compared to alternatives in the Game Board category, it stands out with its well-received user rating of 4.1/5 and a paid model without ads, indicating a focus on quality over monetization. However, its relatively low download numbers and lack of extensive online features might make it less appealing to some users. The app's offline capability and lack of permissions are notable advantages in terms of accessibility and privacy.

Cons

  • The app's relatively low download numbers might indicate a lack of awareness or marketing, which could impact its online community and multiplayer features.
  • The paid model, while ad-free, might be a barrier for some users who prefer free-to-play games or are unsure about purchasing a game without trying it first.
  • The lack of extensive online features, such as leaderboards or multiplayer modes, might limit the game's replay value and social interaction for some users.
  • The app's size and system requirements are not specified, which could be a concern for users with limited storage or older devices.

Best for: The ideal user for Race for the Galaxy is a strategic board game enthusiast, likely between the ages of 18 and 45, with a medium to high level of technical skill, who values a challenging and immersive gaming experience, and is willing to invest in a paid app for a high-quality, ad-free experience.

So far it is a solid implementation, but it lacks some of the functionality of the desktop (Steam) version. Specifically, It does not highlight cards that require action from the player. For example, in the desktop version, when certain cards are eligible for being played, discarded, or various other actions, the desktop version will surround them with a glowing highlight. Without this, it is not always obvious which cards need action. This is confusing, especially for new players.

One of the best games, and an excellent digital implementation, but recent OS updates have broken card highlighting. This makes the game much less user-friendly. It first occurred on my Samsung Galaxy Tab A 10.1 (2019) when it updated to Android 11, and now occurs on my Pixel 6 running Android 12. This app hasn't been updated in 3 years so I'm not expecting a fix, but maybe we'll get lucky?

The app works fine enough. Sadly, playing against the AI usually ends up being boring. On "medium"' the AI doesn't play well enough to really compete, and on "hard" it's so ruthless about playing the "consume for 2x points, produce" cycle that winning a game has nothing to do with skill, just the coin flip of whether you draw exactly the cards you need to do the cycle first. Ultimately, the base game just isn't very well balanced, but the expansions are too expensive to bother with.

The app needs an update. I was able to open and run it but the top part of the screen was cut off. If there were buttons to close or go back on certain screens, I couldn't find or tap them. This is a great game, it's a shame the interface makes it unplayable.
