Cartographers v1.7.1
Brettspielwelt GmbHAbout this app
Cartographers is a digital adaptation of a 'Flip & Write' game that caters to fans of the Roll Player universe, offering a unique gaming experience that combines strategy and luck. This app benefits enthusiasts of board games and puzzle solvers, providing a challenging and engaging experience. Compared to other Game Board category apps, Cartographers stands out due to its nomination as an Expert Game of the Year, indicating a high level of quality and engagement. However, its relatively low download numbers might indicate a niche appeal, limiting its mass market potential.
Pros
- Cartographers boasts a good user rating of 4.0/5, indicating a generally positive reception from players who appreciate its challenging gameplay and faithful adaptation of the physical board game.
- The app's paid model with optional in-app purchases suggests a balanced approach to monetization, allowing players to enhance their experience without being forced into aggressive purchases.
- Given its lack of required permissions, Cartographers demonstrates a commitment to user privacy, making it a trustworthy choice for those concerned about data security.
- The developer, Brettspielwelt GmbH, has a reputation for creating quality board game adaptations, which adds to the credibility and expectations of a polished gaming experience.
- Cartographers' offline capability and lack of ads enhance the gaming experience, providing uninterrupted gameplay that is conducive to focus and enjoyment.
Cons
- A potential drawback is the app's relatively low number of downloads, which might indicate limited community engagement or a smaller player base for multiplayer interactions.
- Some users might find the $4.99 price point for the base game, combined with the option for in-app purchases, to be on the higher side, especially considering the availability of free or lower-cost alternatives in the Game Board category.
- The app's requirement for Android 5.1 or higher might exclude some older devices, potentially limiting its accessibility to users with older hardware.
- Despite its positive aspects, the lack of a free version or trial might deter some potential users who prefer to test an app before committing to a purchase.
Best for: The ideal user for Cartographers is likely an individual aged 18-50 who enjoys strategic board games, puzzles, and has some experience with the Roll Player universe or similar 'Flip & Write' games, possessing a mid to high level of technical skill to navigate the app's features and potentially manage in-app purchases.

Cartographers users say on Google Play
Rating updated to 5 stars. The issues mentioned in my original review have all been addressed and the game runs perfectly! On a side note, would it be possible for a feature request? I would love a feature like what was included in Noch Mal, the digital dice/pad where the app can be used as a supplement to the physical game if you own it. If there was a mode of play in this app that handled the card flipping and seasons to use alongside physical map sheets and pencils, that would be awesome.
I have the tabletop version of Cartographers and I love it! This app is a single player version of the game, and we'll done at that. Intuitive controls and UI, with well done animations, music and sounds. However, I think it's missing the best part of the tabletop experience which is a multiplayer mode. I would personally love to see it so paid users can host (local or online), unpaid users can join games for free.
Game is fun, but why am I forced to close an ad for another game when I finish a round? Cartographers is a paid for game and shouldn't have ads.
I can't seem to figure out how to register my email within the app to unlock 2 out of the 3 game modes. This is pretty terrible ux/ui design. I feel like I wasted 2/3 of my money.
No button to close the app. No ability to zoom in on round cards (although you can zoom in on the scoring objectives), and locked up during the tutorial. If you're only ever going to play this on a tablet, it might be fine, but if you're planning to play on a phone, even a fairly large one, you damn well better already know what every card is.
